During our Reader’s workshop we each had a chance to read many times with Ms. McCormack and each child received a new just-right book. We worked in several centers where we practiced reading and writing harder words, making words that rhyme with take, and writing small words with the correct vowel sound. We also worked on two spring Pokey-Pin activities which really help to strengthen our fine motor muscles. During our math block we played Growing and Disappearing Train (and recorded our rolls), practiced adding small numbers when we worked with Mr. Gurtman and solved pattern block puzzles. We played some fun games called Mystery Block and Dice Addition. We each wrote a number story, practiced adding small numbers using a number line when we played Frog Hop, and we tried to identify a 3-d shape by it’s feel. During Writer’s Workshop we began a new unit of study about persuasive writing. We immersed ourselves in stories of persuasion and opinion. We discovered that an opinion is something that is true for me while a fact is something that is true for everyone. We read stories which feature a character who voices a strong opinion and tries to persuade others to believe that same thing. Stories such as Duck! Rabbit!; Franklin Wants a Pet; and Hey, Little Ant will be valuable mentor texts as we work on developing our own persuasive pieces. Mrs. Hutchins visited us this week to talk with us about the 5 Point Scale. She introduced the poster that shows us what each point means and she let us know that we’ll be seeing these posters all around our school. Then she read a great story about a pair of lobsters named Bob and Shirley.

If you have not done so, please sign up for a parent teacher conference. I am looking forward to speaking with each of you! During our Writer's workshop we have continued working on our true stories. We've explored adding feelings and details to our writing to make our stories the best they can be. We've also taken on a big challenge and selected personal writing goals. After examining several mentor texts such as Are You My Mother?; Not Norman; and Mother Bruce each child chose a personal goal to focus on for the next few weeks. Writers could choose to focus on spaces between words, writing priority words correctly, stretching out words or writing more for example. During our Math block we played hiding bears again, this time writing a number model to match. We used playdough to level a pan balance, practiced adding small numbers with Mr. Gurtman and learned how important it is make smart estimates. On Thursday we each conducted a survey and decided on a way to display this data in a way that was easy to read. During our Reader's workshop we each read with Ms. McCormack and received one OR two (!) new just right books. We practiced reading harder words like went and this; practiced identifying and writing vowel sounds; and we worked with Miss. Jess to put the letters of the alphabet in order. We continue to learn about pushes and pulls. This week we visited the maker space to create playground equipment that can be used with either a pull or a push. Here are some pictures of us working at our creations and sharing their function with our classmates.
