This week we continued our study of weather conditions. We played Weather Bingo, watched a couple of videos about observing the weather and decided which type of activity would be appropriate depending on the weather. When Mrs. Benoit visited us she taught us about the difference between thoughts and feelings. She taught us that we think thoughts in our brain and we feel feelings in our hearts. Mrs. Benoit read us a story called Thinking Thoughts and Feeling Feelings. During Reader’s workshop we learned about a very special place in our classroom: our classroom library. We learned that the library is a place to read books and to talk about the books we read. We learned how to choose books and how to return them to their proper places. We’ll practice reading in our library almost every day as we grow as readers. We also learned about a new routine called “centers”. We learned that during centers we’ll be working on different skills sometimes with an adult helper and sometimes independently. This week we worked at centers to help us practice reading in the library, writing our names with play dough and sorting letters. For stories we read Pig the Pug; Rhyming Dust Bunnies (several times!); Orange Pear Apple Bear; Sheep in a Jeep. We also read several poems such as Little Miss Muffett; Old King Cole; and This Little Piggy. During our Math Block we learned how to play a fun game called Count and Sit and about a math tool called a five frame. We studied different shapes looking for similarities and differences and we looked closely at the numbers 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. During our Writer’s workshop we complete our Special Student routine, started keeping our pieces of writing in our writing folders and wrote some stories to teach others about ourselves. We also practiced two fire drills this week. It was a fun, busy week!!
Just a reminder that Monday we’ll start our monthly share routine. October’s share theme is a Family Share. Please check out our Share Dates page for more information.

This week we continued to grow as a community of learners. We shared our Hopes and Dreams and made a LONG list of rules that would be important if we want to accomplish all of our hopes and dreams. While we were chatting about those rules we decided that there were too many so we sorted them into categories and decided upon these three rules: We will remember to: Take care of ourselves. Take care of each other Take care of our school. We continued our Special Student routine and looked closely at the names of Quentin, Chris, Hayden, Collin, Chloe, Hina and Rylen. This week we began talking about words that rhyme. We read and acted out the poem Jack Be Nimble. It was fun when we substituted Jack’s name with each of our names. We also practiced hearing rhymes in a silly poem called Did You Ever See? For stories we read No, David; Chrysanthemum; I’ll Wait, Mr. Panda; My New Friend is So Fun; and First Day Jitters. During our Math block we practiced seeing numbers around our school when we took a number walk, we practiced counting when we played Gotcha!, we looked closely at the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 and we practiced showing “5” lots of different ways. October begins our monthly share routine. Each day one child will share with their classmates. Since we are still getting to know each other, October’s share will be a Family Share. Your child may bring to school a picture they have drawn or a photograph showing everybody in their family. Please help your child by having them practice three things they can share about their family. This could be a special trip you take every year, something funny about your family, or a fun fact about your family. The schedule for October’s share can be found on the Share Dates page under the MORE tab above.
