Wow! It is hard to believe that we have only been in school for nine days. This week we continued learning routines and learning about each other. Every morning, during our greeting we practice saying the names of the children in our class. One of the routines that we began this week is called Special Student. One child’s name is drawn from a box and they become the Special Student. We notice the letters that spell their name, practice writing their name and then we all draw the Special Student who gets to take our pictures home in a little book! This is a chance for us to look closely at letters as we grow our understanding of our alphabet. This week we practiced “Turn and Talk”. We learned that when we turn and talk we look at our friend, listen to what they have to say and then we take our turn to talk. We used our summer-in-a-bag items to talk about. Turn and talk is an important routine that we’ll use again and again over the year. During our Math block we created a graph that shows how old we are and a display that shows when our birthdays are. We practiced measuring when we played Partner Match and looked closely at our Pattern Blocks. We also continued our calendar routines by adding the days of this week to our calendar, counting how many days we’ve come to school and recording that number on our growing number grid. Finally we added another yellow day to our weather graph--that means another warm day in September. Today is International Dot Day. To celebrate we read The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds and we worked on some “dot” activities. We painted dots, learned how to use the dot daubers and made pictures of what 10 black dots could be. For stories we read Oliver and the Alligator (again!); 10 Black Dots; Dog and Mouse; Good Night Gorilla; Tuesday; Can I Play Too?; Please Mr. Panda; The Dot; and A My Name is Alice. Today Mrs. Bergeron visited us to read a story and she read Rocket Learns to Read.
