Every day we check on our Decorah eagles. All three of the eggs have hatched and we've been delighted to see the fluffy babies as they poke their heads out of their nest and tell Mom and Dad to feed them! This week we concluded our study of Pushes and Pulls by examining Speed and Direction. We used cardboard, blocks and a ruler to solve a tricky problem. The problem was how to move a toy car and have it end up in just the right spot WITHOUT giving it a push or a pull. After many false starts we discovered that using a ramp was a great way to move the car, but that the ramp had to be just right so the car wouldn't go too far. During our Reader’s workshop everyone received a new just-right book and we worked at centers where we practiced hearing ending sounds, reading harder spelling words and writing small words. During our Math block we During our Math block we used a steady beat to measure the time it takes to walk and tiptoe down the hall. We practiced finding solid shapes by feel, played the Mystery Block game, and practiced skip counting by 10’s. We made 2-and 3-dimensional shapes using toothpicks and marshmallows and then talked about our shapes. We practiced counting on from several random numbers and learned that this is a skill that Kindergarteners should practice a lot! During our Writer’s workshop we learned that writers sometimes write letters to persuade people and to solve a problem. We wrote to the “Kid” from the story Hey Little Ant! telling him why or why not to squish the ant. We read a fun story called I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato and we talked about how sometimes, writers write about things they don’t like. We added an opinion piece about something we do not like to our writing folders. We decided that persuasive opinion pieces should tell our opinion, have several reasons why, use the word because and include details. We've been enjoying our April share. On Friday Caleb shared an old army truck.
