Uno, dos, tres….Fiesta!!! Our Fiesta a fun time for all. At our Fiesta we participated in four different activities: story-telling, maraca making, playing games and singing. Over the past two weeks we've worked to make a pinata. Our Bumblebee sure looks cute! After lunch we learned to play a new math game called Growing Train and then we smashed our pinata! It was a fun day. Please go to our Photo Gallery page to see pictures from our Fiesta. Thank you to everyone who has sent in cans of meat. We are up to 27 cans. Thank you for sending warm winter clothes every day. It was too cold for a long lunch recess on Thursday, but we were able to get outside for a few minutes.

This week we continued our study of Mexico and made some little Elf Owls to live in our sarago cactus. We practiced a couple of songs...in Spanish because that is the official language of Mexico. We learned a color song called Los Colores and a fun song called Cabeza, Cintura. During our Writer’s workshop we began a new unit of study. For the next few weeks we’ll be learning about and writing How-to books. How-to books (as their name suggests) teach somebody how to do something. We began by all creating the same book called “How-to Get Ready for Recess”. We learned that a how-to book has numbered steps with pictures that show each step. We also learned that the best way to teach someone how to do something in a book is to write directly to them so we learned how to spell and write the word YOU. During our Math block we learned about an important math symbol: the equal sign. We learned that when we see the equal sign, what is on either side of it needs to be the same. We used a double ten frame to make teen numbers, and arranged shapes to make other shapes. During our Reader’s workshop we continued to practice hearing and identifying sounds that letters make, reading and writing our spelling words, and reading our just-right books. On Friday we read with our Reading Buddies. Another way that we'll celebrate 100 days of school is by giving back to our community. Each class will try to collect 100 items for the York Food Pantry. Our class will be collecting canned meat. Each child will record their contribution. We're on our way to 100!! During the week of February 12th, we will celebrate the 100th day of school-provided we don’t have too many snow days. As part of this celebration we would like each child to create a project using 100 objects. The project will be completed at home and brought to school to share with the class. It can be as simple as linking 100 paper clips together, or making a design on paper with 100 objects like pennies, toothpicks, buttons, stickers, etc. The items can be pasted on a poster board, strung together, or any other creative idea. Please do not use any food items for the 100th day object. Any design your child makes will be celebrated. This is a great time to have your child practice counting by ones, fives, and tens. They will be asked to share with classmates how they counted the items. The completed projects can be brought in any day from February 5th through February 16th. If you have any questions, please let me know.
