We welcomed February with some cute groundhog puppets. Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow which means we can look forward to six more weeks of winter. During our Reader's workshop we learned that readers can use Pattern Power to help read their just right books. After reading lots of simple books with patterns we discovered that most of the time the pattern changes at the end of the book. We sang the vowel song several times and we practiced identifying tricky vowel sounds by sorting objects. On Thursday Mrs. Heelan joined our centers and taught us how to make origami. Friday we read with our Reading Buddies. During our Math block we worked on our number scrolls, played growing train and top-it with teen numbers. We practiced showing our mathematical thinking by drawing the answer to a number story, compared different classroom objects to our own height, and we ordered straws by length. During math centers on Friday we showed teen numbers on a double ten frame then wrote those number models, created a shape graph and practiced ordering and counting numbers. During our Writer's workshop we learned writers are careful to tell their reader exactly what their how-to book is about and that they can add a warning to their books. We practiced writing complete sentences in our how-to books and we continue to work on adding spaces between our words. Complete sentences and spaces really do make our writing easier to read. We received a few more cans for the food pantry this week. We are up to 33 "canned meats". If you are able to support the York Food Pantry in this way, we will be collecting canned meat for another two weeks.
