During our Reader’s workshop we learned that, just like grown-up readers, readers in kindergarten like to read and then talk about books with friends. We learned that during partner reading we sit side-by-side, place the book in the middle and then we look, think and read!. We also continued our study of rhyming words. We made a book about silly rhymes, matched rhyming pictures and read some silly rhyming stories such as Nicole Digs a Hole and Don’t Forget the Bacon. We practiced reading our letter chart different ways and discovered that our letter chart has a picture for each letter that will help us to learn the sound that the letters make. We worked at centers finding the letters in our name, using “pokey-pins” and choosing initial sounds on some fun Halloween clip cards. During our Math block we practiced adding and subtracting small numbers when we played “Pocket Problems” and “Fish in the Pond”. We counted on a number board and discovered that each number is exactly one more than the number before it. We played “Dot Top-it”, made patterns and learned a new routine called “Count the Room”. We learned that writers work on the story they want to write even if the idea is hard to draw. We celebrated writing that tells a story and includes labels. We learned that when writers have more to tell in their story they can add another page. We shared our writing and practiced asking “What are you going to do next?”

When Mrs. Benoit visited us she taught us about “whole body listening”. We learned that when we listen to somebody we listen with our ears, our eyes, our mouths, our hands, our minds and our hearts. Mrs. Benoit read us a story called Whole Body Listening. During our Writer’s Workshop we learned that writers write almost every day. Sometimes they work for several days on the same piece until they have written all they need to. We learned that when a writer encounters a problem, like a broken pencil or that they don’t have the color they need, they can help themselves without waiting for the teacher. We learned that writers say a word ssslllooowwwwllllyyyyy and then write the first sound they hear. We shared our writing with a partner and asked "What are you going to work on next?" During our Math block we looked closely at repeating and growing patterns; played two new games called Match-up and Top-it. We played these games with “dot cards”. Learning to look at a group of objects to quickly find out how many is an important foundational mathematics skill that we’ll practice over the next several weeks. During our Reader’s Workshop we learned that we are all readers. We learned that we are already good at reading signs that we see around us. We played a fun bingo game reading familiar words such as McDonalds, Lego and Crayola. We learned that readers read books all the way through and when they are done they choose another book. We practiced reading from book tubs with favorite characters such as Franklin, Little Critter and Clifford. For stories we read What This Story Needs Is a Pig in a Wig; This Book Just Ate My Dog (twice!); Frog on a Log; We’re In The Wrong Book!; and Whose Mouse Are You?. We also read our alphabet chart several times and several different ways. We've been enjoying learning more about each other through our October family share. For your child's share date please check the Share Dates page of this website. You can access it through the "MORE" tab above.
