"December's wintery breath is already clouding the pond, frosting the pane, obscuring summer's memory..." John Geddes During our Reader’s workshop we learned about two more super powers that readers have. In addition to “pointer power”, we have the power to “re-read” our stories and we have “snap word” power. Re-reading is how readers in Kindergarten get to be stronger readers and when we combine that skill with the power to quickly read our Kindergarten spelling words we’ll be able to read more and more books. Readers had fun reading in our Gingerbread House during private and partner reading time. During our centers we matched upper and lowercase letters, listened for the beginning sound in words, read our just right books to Ms. Audet and completed a mystery picture. We started a new “gingerbread” write the room, identified the number of syllables in words and we colored a book with our new spelling word /like/ in it. On Friday we read with our Reading Buddies. Today during our extra library time, we explored school tools, play dough tools and woodworking tools in the maker space. During our Writer’s workshop we learned that the faces of the people in our stories will show how they are feeling. We also learned that our pencil helps us to write, but that we can flip it over and use it as a pointer to help us read our stories. We looked at how grown up authors add a period (or question mark) to the end of their sentences and we searched for places in our writing where we might need a period. Finally we learned that our true stories should have a beginning, a middle and an end. During our Math block we learned about attribute blocks, practiced sorting them many ways and learned that we could identify their shapes with our eyes closed. We made a graph of our favorite colors, showed different numbers on a ten frame and learned about the calculator. During our centers we practiced counting objects, building with pattern blocks, putting numbers in order, counted "teen" numbers during "count the room" and we completed a Number Race.

During our Math block we began learning how to write numbers “the school way”. We looked closely at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. We played a partner game where we matched the number of fingers with a number card, learned that there are lots of different ways to show a number and played a fun game called Monster Squeeze. During our math centers we colored ten frames to show numbers 0 to 10 and practiced counting lots of different ways. During our Writer’s workshop we began learning about how to write a “sentence”. We learned that the story we want to tell can be told in a sentence and that words will make this story. We reminded ourselves where writers get ideas for their true stories and we looked closely at our chart of how to write a really good true story. We learned that the pictures we make for our story help us to remember the words we want to write and that when we write our sentences should have spaces. This week we were able to participate in the Hour of Code. Mrs. Slone led us as we explored four different ways to practice coding. During our Reader’s workshop we learned that every reader has Super Powers! These super powers will help us to learn how to read the actual words in stories. We learned that pointer power helps us to read each and every word in the story. We practiced pointing to and reading each word in our favorite poem Jack Be Nimble. We had time to read privately and with partners. During our literacy centers we began a new rhyming write the room, matched pictures to the sound heard at the beginning of the word, practiced writing our names (and our friend’s names), and we said words slowly to hear their syllables.
