During our Reader's workshop we learned that when readers talk about their books they will often talk about the characters and the setting. We learned that the characters are the people animals or creatures in the story and that the setting is the place where most of the story takes place. We worked with Ms. Audet to write about the beginning, the middle and the end of one of our just right books. Everyone received a new just right book and read with Ms. McCormack. During our Math block we learned a game called Dice Subtraction and played it two times! This game will help us to subtract small numbers quickly. We used craft sticks to decompose teen numbers into a bundle of ten and "some more" and then made number models to show this work. During our Writer's Workshop we continued our study of opinion pieces. Each writer worked hard to craft their pieces so that the reader could really understand why they felt the way they did. We learned that when a writer is trying to persuade the reader they will state their opinion, tell their reason why and then include some facts which support their opinion. Thursday morning Rylen shared a new game for our classroom. He brought a chess game and began teaching some children how to play. Thursday afternoon Mrs. Heelan joined us to work with us on making origami designs. As we prepare to enjoy a much-needed break from the demands and routines of school, I would like to take this opportunity to share with you how proud I am of each and every one of your children. They are a kind, flexible group of learners who are working hard to grow their independence and their academic skills. Thank you for sharing them with me every day.
I hope you enjoy this time with family and friends! Ms. McCormack
