During our Writer’s workshop we chose one piece to revise and published this piece at our Writer’s Celebration. The writers from Miss. Mulqueen’s class joined us Thursday morning to share our stories. Today your children have brought home several small paper books. We cleaned out our book boxes and these little books are just too easy! This week during Reader’s workshop we learned that readers have a few more super powers to help them to read books. Snap Word power is the power to read some words so quickly that we barely even notice them. So far the snap words that we have practiced are I, a, the, and, my, we, like, is, it, and to. That list will grow to include words such as said, can, and here. Another super power is Sound power. Readers use their sound power when they come to a tricky word and say each sound until the figure out what makes sense. And finally we learned that Super Readers don’t give up. They use their Persistence power to keep trying until they solve the tricky word. Everyone got one or two new just-right books and at centers we worked on activities to help us identify the sounds that letters make. On Friday we read with our first grade Reading Buddies. During our Math block we played Roll and Record with two dot dice, practiced finding combinations of ten, played a game called Bears on the Bus and practiced naming and drawing shapes as we went on a shape walk around our school. We continue to practice counting by ones and tens all the way to 100. We continued our study of Mexico this week. We learned that Mexico has deserts and in those deserts lives the giant Sarago cactus and in that cactus lives an elf owl. We also learned about and made cut paper banners and paper lanterns. Our classroom is looking very festive!
