A week that begins with a storm, cancelled school, no power and then a party is going to be a busy fun week! Our Halloween party was a spooktacular success thanks to our outstanding parent volunteers. Mrs. Behm, Mrs. Foster, Mrs. Heelan and Mrs. Mendoza joined us to help run a center or make a craft on Halloween morning. You can see more pictures on the Photo Gallery page of our website. This week we continued our study of Native Americans in Maine by making a village from long, long ago. We talked about how long ago people would have gotten everything they need from nature. We made houses to live in, boats to fish from, corn to eat and the forest in which to hunt. We read a story about a Native American from present day called Two Pair of Shoes and we talked about how some Native Americans today continue some traditions such as making moccasins and birch bark canoes. During our Writer’s Workshop we learned that when writers are writing their true stories they work hard to remember to tell who was there and what they were doing. We practiced stretching words to hear more sounds when we wrote about our halloween costumes. During our Math Block we began a discussion about counting by ten’s when we realized that we could count the number of days we’ve been in school much quicker by skip counting to 40. We worked with a ten frame to find combinations of 10 and we played several rounds of count and sit. During our Reader’s workshop we learned that readers can share “Wow!” pages with their partner during partner reading. We decided that a “Wow!” page could be a page that we wonder about, or that surprises us, or that makes us feel sad or that makes us laugh. We worked at several different centers to practice recognizing letters and to learn the sounds that letters make. On Friday we read with our Reading Buddies in their first grade classroom.
